Tobacco control in Ontario: How well are we doing and where can we improve?

Findings from OTRU’s Annual Strategy Monitoring Report

This webinar was presented by the Program Training and Consultation Centre (PTCC) in collaboration with the Ontario Tobacco Research Unit (OTRU).

Drawing on information from population-level surveys, program evaluations, performance reports and administrative data, the Ontario Tobacco Research Unit’s Smoke-Free Ontario Strategy Monitoring Report presents up-to-date evaluative information about the accomplishments and challenges of comprehensive tobacco control in Ontario.

In this webinar, Dr. Robert Schwartz and Dr. Shawn O'Connor provided an overview of the current status of tobacco control in Ontario by answering the following questions:

  • Is tobacco use any different from cigarette use?
  • Are emerging products an issue?
  • Are we done with protection?
  • Is there any need for an increase in price/tax?
  • Does smoking increase gradually with age or does the rate jump?
  • Does mass media/social marketing have a role in a comprehensive strategy?

New in this year’s report: plotting progress against Smoke-Free Ontario – Scientific Advisory Committee (SFO-SAC) recommendations.
