Post-secondary Campuses

The Smoke-Free Ontario Act (SFOA) prohibits smoking in enclosed workplaces and enclosed public places, including the buildings on post-secondary campuses. The SFOA also prevents the sale of tobacco on post-secondary campuses. However, smoking is still permitted on the grounds of many Ontario colleges and universities.

Instituting smoke-free campuses is an important step in addressing the high smoking rates of young adults in Ontario.

Public health units are working with post-secondary institutions to:
  • Develop comprehensive smoke-free campus policies and implementation plans
  • Ensure that cessation services and supports are available on campus
  • Address enforcement issues
