Choose To Be... Smoke-free: Peterborough County-City Health Unit's Woman-Centred Program

In 2008, 12.4% of Ontarian women who were pregnant smoked during their pregnancy (Born Ontario, 2010). Recognizing the need to support pregnant and recently pregnant women in Ontario to quit smoking, Echo: Improving Women’s Health in Ontario (Echo) launched Ignite Innovation: Improving Health for Pregnant Women Who Smoke, a multi-year project that would bring together community women, service providers, and policy makers to develop smoking cessation programming for pregnant and recently pregnant women in Ontario. As part of this project, Echo identified the regions in Ontario with the highest smoking rates among pregnant women, and partnered with organizations in these regions. Peterborough County-City Health Unit (PCCHU) was one of these partners.

This report highlights the development and initial implementation of one Echo demonstration project, Choose to Be…Smoke-Free, which was developed by the PCCHU and seeks to enhance opportunities for pregnant and postpartum women to quit or reduce tobacco-use. The report identifies key success factors and lessons learned to support other public health practitioners interested in implementing similar programs in their own communities.

An overview of this Documentation of Practice was presented via webinar on June 21, 2012.
