Brief Counselling for Tobacco Use Cessation: A Guide for Health Professionals

Revised in 2015, this resource outlines the 5A’s framework of brief tobacco cessation intervention (Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist and Arrange), an evidence-based best practice that can be implemented in as little as three minutes.

In this guide, you will learn the importance of a client-centred approach and how to integrate a conversation about tobacco into the work you are already doing to support healthier living. The guide provides simple talking points for tobacco use change, customized to various levels of readiness, as well as tools that you can use and reproduce to tailor your intervention. If your context and time allows, the guide also describes ways to increase your investment in cessation counselling.

Consistent application of the 5A's by health professionals with clients who use tobacco has been shown to improve health outcomes. Most tobacco users want to quit, and you can help.
